Eerything would be alright. But it never was. Whenever I walked into the building that smelled like rubber gloves, hand sanitizer, and vaccinations. The nurse greeted me with a sympathetic smile each day.
“Not yet,” She would whisper, “Not yet.” Then we would both look over to my older brother, tubes running through his body.
His eyes were always closed and I wondered if they would ever open again. I would sit there by his side for about an hour, and tell him about my day while my eyes welled up with salty tears. “Everyone at school is asking if your okay,” I would tell my brother. “I keep telling them, ‘soon.’”
I sniffed. “And then they asked what happened.” I would pause and then think if my brother could hear me, even though his condition. One of his fingers moved the slightest. “Yes,” I say. “I tell them what happened.”
It was a sunny afternoon when It Happened. My athletic, sporty, brother Jake was going to play football against the other team again for the final game of the season at the local park. Mom has gotten all excited about it, she had even bought Jake new gear for the game. It was no doubt Jake would win. He always snagged the ball and got it where he wanted it to be. Basically, he was the star player of the game. Until It Happened. The football was charging at him and slapped him in the forehead-at the same time while five other players lunged for him. Then everything happened in slow motion. Jake wouldn’t move off the grass. Mom rang toward the field to check on him as the referee blew the whistle. I could hear sirens a few minutes later as the ambulance crew picked up my brother and carried him into the flashing truck. Dad put his arms around me as I stood there, frozen as everything that just had happened came to my mind like one of those videos where everything happens fast. The next thing I knew, I was looking at my brother in the hospital room, the doctor saying something about him being asleep for awhile.
All I could think about was how I was going to live without him and if he would ever wake.[继续阅读]
